Philip Riley - Milford Sound Sales Consultant

Philip Riley Go Orange

Q - How long have you worked for Go Orange?
Since November 2018. I used to work for Real Journeys years ago with Kara, who was the head of Fiordland operations. She roped me in for another round of fun with Go Orange.

Q - Why did you choose to live and work in Milford Sound?
I wanted to show my partner how amazing it is to live and work in Milford Sound for a full season.

Q - What is the best part of your job?
Meeting new people and telling them all about where we live and remote living.

Q - Tell us about a memorable moment during your time with Go Orange?
All trips are memorable. I love the many personalities Milford has. It can be raining one hour, blue skies the next and prevailing winds… it’s never ending and certainly never boring.

Q - What is your favorite feature on the brand new Milford Haven boat?
The amazing tap beer! The Haven XPA is the best in Milford!

Q - Tell us, what do you like to do outside of work?
Adventure around NZ. We love exploring and camping in the Catlin’s and visiting Queenstown, the adventure capital of NZ.

Q - What is your favorite part about living and working in Milford Sound?
We are the only ones experiencing the total remoteness and isolation.

Q - If you didn’t for Go Orange what would you do?
I would probably get a corporate job in tourism or transport.

Q - If you could live and work anywhere in the world where would it be?
I have lived in many locations in the world including the UK, Australia and USA. New Zealand is where I have ended up after 15 years of travel, there’s no place like home.

Q - What was life before Go Orange?
I was a business owner/operator in Tekapo prior to that I was business development manager for Virgin Airways. Before that I was cabin crew, exploring the world.

Q - If you could travel anywhere in the world where would it be?
If I could teleport it would be to Paris in the morning for a fresh croissant and a coffee, but be back in time for the first sailing at 9am in Milford Sound.

Q - Describe your perfect day in Fiordland?
When it rains. Wonderful waterfalls and excited faces of people who saw the hundreds and hundreds of waterfalls on route and out in the sound.

Q - Have you travelled around New Zealand? If so what is your favorite spot?
Yes, I’ve travelled the country top to toe several times and my favorite spot is the Otago Peninsula. The Wildlife is amazing, as is the scenery.

Q - What is one thing you suggest for people to do while visiting New Zealand?
I suggest people compare Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound as they are completely different, Timaru’s Caroline Bay is also a great hidden spot and for a totally unique dinner experience try the Christchurch tram restaurant.
